Tech Gadgets For the Tech Generation

With technology dictating our lifestyle, tech gadgets are increasingly becoming integral part of our lives. The word, ‘gadget’ is considered to be used as a placeholder name for technical stuffs without a specific name. A tech-gadget is generally a technology product or object, which has got some specific functionality. Most often than not, this could be a brand new product or an innovative concept design.

These gadgets are also known as gizmos. When compared to other normal technological objects and stuffs, these are considered to be ingeniously designed and implemented. We could say that gadgets stand out from the rest of the pack.

Classifying gadgets is indeed an awkward job, since a gadget could be virtually anything and everything you could possible think of! On a rough note, tech gadgets could be electronic equipments, application software, accessories or enhancements, toys, mobile phones, gaming devices, etc. The introduction of a new gadget, to the market is bound to instill curiosity and excitement in the target audience.

Here, the instinctive characteristics of humans to feel crazy for unprecedented functional novelties and odd design implementations are exploited to the full effect. A tech-gadget could be as advanced as a hi-tech robot or mobile phone; sometimes it could be as cool and simple as a grocery bag grip! On some occasions they are as useful as an advanced GPS device; on some other times they are as ridiculous as an electrically powered pencil sharpener.

Tech gadgets that seem useful to some people may not be useful to others. Some people may find a gadget so innovative and stylish that they want to try it as soon as it is available on the market, while some others may think that they are ridiculous and a waste of money! For most of the younger generation of people, tech-gadgets are part of their life and personal technology, and they cannot even think about living without their beloved gizmos!

This is the age of hi tech gadgets. No body is complete without them and we rely so much on these tech gadgets for our day to day activities.

French Learning Software WON’T Teach You Anything – Conversation Will

The trouble with learning software

We live in exciting times, where all the knowledge in the world is just one click away. So if you want to learn a new language, easy: just Google it, and find the right software. Learning French is that simple…or is it?

Chances are, if you buy or download one of these learning software, you’ll stick with it for a few days, weeks, maybe even a few months, and then you’ll give up. You’ll have learned a few things in the process: basic vocabulary, a few sentences, but that’s it. The ugly truth that language learning software vendors don’t want you to know is that software doesn’t teach French (or any other language), people teach French.

The good news is: who writes software? That’s right, people. So maybe people can teach French through software. It’s all a question of design.

How NOT to learn French efficiently

When software vendors concentrate more on the tech wiz that on actually teaching languages to their customers, the result can be nice, but often feels cold and unfriendly. Providing nice interactions, good-looking pictures and all, even though helpful and necessary, only goes so far. This is why most people don’t stick with the software for long: it lacks a certain human touch. Sadly, this means that the tremendous effort spend in the software design is wasted. It’s a shame for everyone: the client doesn’t really benefit from the software, despite the hefty price he paid for it, and the developers at the software vendor’s company spend their time building a huge system ultimately used to its full potential by very few people.

Ultimately, customers will realise that the software might not be worth the price, and even give up on the idea of learning French entirely. This is not good for the software vendor in the long run. Is there a way out of that cycle? Do we have to give up on the whole idea of using technology for language learning? Maybe not. Maybe there’s another way to build language learning software.

Going back to basics

So, what kind of software can we design to really teach languages? Well, think about it: what’s the best, time-tested way to learn a new language? Think about it, how did you learn your own language? Through listening, reading, speaking and communicating with people. In one word: we learn language through conversation.

Starting from there, it’s probably a great idea to create language learning software designed to support conversation, instead of focusing on fancy tech and funny learning activities. Cool technologies, animations, graphics, and proper instructional design are great, but to really learn, you have to feel that you are discussing something with real human beings. It doesn’t have to be in real time (email and online forums are great examples of real discussions that happen asynchronously). It doesn’t even have to involve voice (text chats are great to practice your spelling and reflecting on your sentences. They are also very good if you are a bit shy about talking to a stranger in French). It just has to be a genuine, human-to-human conversation. To design efficient language learning software, that’s the direction we need to take: enabling conversation through design and technology.

Do you want to be a part of the conversation?

Things an Office Assistant Should Know Before Calling Tech Support

Administrative and other office assistants are often the ones left with the responsibility of calling technical support when there are computer issues in the office.  Others in the office may think that this is a very simple job but if you are not prepared with the required information before you call, a phone conversation with tech support can get very long.  It can also be very trying on the patience of the technical support staff on the other end of the phone if you do not have the information that they need in order to answer your questions and help you to find a solution.

There are two main types of technical support that your office may require.  One type is that which relates to the computer itself.  The other type of technical support you may need is related to the software that your computer is running.  When you make a phone call to get tech support you should know what kind of computer issue you are dealing with.

To make your phone calls for technical support go faster and to get better answers here are some of the things you should know before you put in the call:

  • Do some routine checks – make sure that you are hooked up securely everywhere; make sure your Internet it running properly; restart your computer (you would be amazed at how many things restarting your computer will fix!).
  • Be able to tell them exactly what the problem is.  “The computer isn’t working properly” is not going to help the staff on the other end of the call.  Have some details.  Know when it is that the problem occurs.  Does it only happen when you are logging on or does it happen when you are in a specific program?  If the problem happens when you are in a specific program you should likely be talking to people who deal with that software – not general computer technical support.
  • Be ready to follow instructions – the technical support team is likely to ask you to go into different areas of your computer.  You should know where to find your Control Panel and you should know what is in your Control Panel area.  In order to narrow down the problem they are likely to give you directions like this.
  • Be ready to jot down some notes.  Many computer issues are quite easy to fix and if you write down some basis instructions and keep them in a safe place you will have them ready  in case this happens again in the future.
  • They may ask for you IP number – do you know what that is?  Do you know how to find it?
  • Be ready to give them information like the brand of computer that you have, the RAM capacity, how much free space is available on your hard drive, and the processor type.  These types information will help them decide what instructions they should give you.
  • Know what kind of antivirus program you are using and when it was last updated.  Computer programs are often related to software that has not been updated properly or has had a recent update that has resulted in a change in the settings.
