story “nearly a decade in the making,” the building of the U.S. Food & Drug Administration’s new regional headquarters in Irvine, California, designed by Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership (ZGF) was an extremely complicated process— which ultimately resulted in a great success. The new volume FDA at Irvine, authored by well-respected journalist and critic Raul A. Barreneche, takes readers through the process from the initial process phases through completion. The result is a successful project of which both architect and government agency can be proud. From Barreneche’s text:

When measured by the energy and enthusiasm with which the FDA and its staff have taken to their new home, ZGF’s design is a resounding success....[t]he FDA building’s openness, humanity, informality, and adventurous modern design spirit are among its most important contributions. That it managed to achieve these goals while meeting the complex demands of a secure federal building combining offices and state-of-the-art labs on the edge of a protected wetland is no small feat.
